This blog was created in honor of Reilly Parent, a spirited young boy that just turned the big "10" on October 6th, 2009. He was unfortunately born with a severe case of Arthrogryposis, a congenital defect of the joints. With this incurable joint condition Reilly can not walk, he can not run, he can not throw a ball to his Dad, he can only dream of doing so! His life without the mobility of his chair and the strength of his Mom and Dad's arms would be a challenging existence not just physically but spiritually and mentally as well. Reilly is getting older and heavier his Mom and Dad's ability to lift him is affecting their backs, their arms and in the future will severely limit his mobility. His freedom to move IS his life! His freedom to go to church, go to the playground, to watch the waves at the pier all are tied to mobility. If you ever have the opportunity to meet Reilly, you won't hear Reilly complaining about his fate in life, he most likely will greet you with a smile and offer you a ride on the back of his electric wheelchair.
We were able to attend a church event at Solid Rock Church in Clinton, Michigan a few weeks ago with the Parent family and I noticed first hand the happiness this family illuminates in spite of the difficulties life has thrown at them.
We enjoyed the day with Reilly and his family and realized how much easier their life could be for all of them if they only had a wheelchair van! A van that has been modified with a lift or ramp and raised ceiling where Reilly could just drive up into the van and could stay in his wheelchair. That way he would not have to transfer from his chair to the van each time they needed to go out.
Check out this video of Reilly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qos93IirjUY
This of course is a very expensive item for them to purchase especially since both Steven and Charmaine have been laid off due to the Michigan economic downturn. I felt compelled to make the need known to the rest of you. Some of you already may have been blessed to have met the Parent family at sometime in your life and know the situations they have hurdled through with a smile and giving heart.
If we all do something; big or little, it could possibly provide this wonderful young family with the very one item they most desperately need to lessen their load in life! Not only would Reilly benefit from having a lift van, but I know that Steven and Charmaine would greatly appreciate the help as it would eliminate the need to constantly lift a growing boy whenever they need to travel anywhere.
In Exodus 4:2 The Lord asked
"What is that in your hand?" He could ask us the same today!
You can not give to little or too much! If we all do what we can, then together we can make this happen for Reilly!
We will also continue to lift him up in prayer and ask all of you to do the same!
